- After the murder of his cousin who was Cardinal Beaton, he took refuge in St Andrew's Castle with the other conspirators and when it was captured by the French, he was imprisoned in Cherbourg Castle, later being pardoned by the Queen. He continued to be an ardent supporter of the Reform cause and was captured again by the French.
